Since EVA Air introduced its upgraded Evergreen Class of premium economy seats in 1991, other airlines have followed suit, hoping passengers will pay extra for a slightly enhanced experience. The quality of the experience varies significantly between airlines, with some offering additional perks like increased baggage allowance, better in-flight meals, and improved entertainment. However, what they all share is more legroom and a higher ticket price.
United Airlines, headquartered in Chicago, has expanded on this concept by offering three classes of economy tickets:
- Basic Economy
- Economy
- Economy Plus
In this context, we’ll explore how United Airlines’ Basic Economy compares to its standard Economy class. United’s Economy Class is on par with other major U.S. carriers like Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, but its Basic Economy only includes a limited selection of the benefits typically offered with a regular Economy ticket.
Basic Economy Class
As United Airlines’ most budget-friendly fare, a Basic Economy ticket includes the following features:
- Checked Luggage and Carry-Ons : On domestic flights, passengers are allowed one personal item, such as a shoulder bag or laptop bag, which must fit under the seat in front of them. Full-size carry-on bags are not permitted. The cost for the first checked bag begins at $35, depending on the route. However, on select long-haul routes, particularly transatlantic and transpacific flights, passengers are allowed one free carry-on bag.
- Seat Assignment : Seats are automatically assigned to Basic Economy ticket holders. On some flights, passengers can choose their seat for an additional fee, starting from $10.
- Boarding : Basic Economy passengers are typically the last to board the aircraft, falling into boarding group 5.
- Cancellations and Refunds : Basic Economy tickets are non-changeable. However, as per U.S. regulations, passengers can receive a full refund if they cancel within 24 hours of booking. If the airline cancels a flight after this time frame, passengers will incur a cancellation fee of $99 for domestic flights and $199 for international flights. Refunds are issued as credit vouchers for future bookings, not as cash.
- Miles and Upgrades : Passengers with a Basic Economy fare are not eligible for complimentary upgrades to Economy Plus. Additionally, they will earn only half the frequent flyer miles compared to what they would receive with a regular Economy ticket.
Economy Class
Here’s an overview of what’s included with a standard Economy Class ticket on United Airlines:
- Checked Luggage and Carry-Ons : Economy Class passengers must pay the same fees for checked baggage as those in Basic Economy, but they can bring one free carry-on bag in addition to a personal item.
- Seat Assignment : With an Economy Class ticket, passengers have the option to choose their seats, which is especially beneficial when traveling with friends or family.
- Boarding : Standard Economy passengers board ahead of Basic Economy, typically in groups 3 through 5, giving them an earlier boarding opportunity.
- Cancellations and Refunds : Like Basic Economy, United Airlines has eliminated ticket change fees for Economy Class. Passengers can receive a full refund if they cancel within 24 hours of booking. After that, customers can still cancel their booking, but we will issue the refund as a voucher for future travel.
- Miles and Upgrades : Members of United Airlines’ MileagePlus loyalty program with an Economy Class ticket are eligible for complimentary upgrades to Economy Plus, offering additional comfort.
As with any upgrade, price plays a significant role in deciding whether it’s worth it. To demonstrate this, Simple Flying performed a dummy booking for a one-way flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Orlando International Airport (MCO) on August 24th, comparing the price difference between a Basic Economy ticket and an Economy ticket.
United Airlines offers nine direct flights between these two airports on August 24th. The airline prices the cheapest Basic Economy ticket at $199, while an Economy ticket on the same flight costs $234. Although the flight duration is relatively short—just two hours and 50 minutes—the price difference is only $35. For travelers who want to bring a carry-on bag and select their seat in advance, this small price increase could be well worth the upgrade.
For those seeking additional comfort, United Airlines also offers Economy Plus seats across its fleet. These seats provide extra legroom and other perks. In the same dummy booking, an Economy Plus ticket costs $311, which is $112 more than the Basic Economy fare. This option could appeal to travelers who value extra space and added convenience during their flight.
